This was the theme of the fifth virtual public event, organized by the Latin American Campaign for the Right to Education (CLADE), the Venezuelan Forum for the Right to Education (FOVEDE), the Salvadoran Network for the Right to Education (RESALDE), the National Campaign for the Right to Education (CNDE) and the Education for All Group (REPT) of Haiti.

After the welcome speech from CLADE’s Directive Committee and the presentation of the panel by Guadalupe Leiva (RESALDE) and William Thélusmond (REPT), the session started with the presentation of Luis Bonilla-Molina – Coordinator of the Global/Glocal Network for Education Quality – regarding the current disputes of meaning in education and the so-called “neo-privatization” that has been infiltrating all the different aspects of education based on a privatizing market concept.

Then, on the issue of teachers, the heavy working conditions of teachers, standardized tests and the commitment to an alternative pedagogical movement to combat this burden, Martha Alfonso – a member of the Executive Committee of the Colombian Federation of Education Workers (FECODE) – spoke, followed by Catarina de Almeida, Professor at the National University of Brasilia and member of the Board of Directors of the National Campaign for the Right to Education, who referred to the trends in the financing of the Human Right to Education in Latin America and the Caribbean and specifically to the interesting Brazilian case of Fundeb.

Regarding the ways to strengthen the financing of public education, the mechanisms of fiscal justice and the fight against indebtedness, Camille Chalmers – researcher and executive secretary of the Haitian Platform for the Defense of Alternative Development (PAPDA) – took the floor and also called for the collection of the experiences of the Caribbean countries and their inclusion in the joint reflection carried out by the region.

At the end of the interventions, the speakers responded to the questions and comments that a large audience generated for the debate, as well as providing comments on what was presented by others. Guadalupe Leiva (RESALDE) and William Thélusmond (REPT) closed the event, gathering recommendations for CLADE action.

As today, every Tuesday until November 19, CLADE, in alliance with its members, is organizing public debates to analyze and outline strategies for the effective implementation of the human right to education in Latin America and the Caribbean, in the context of the post-pandemic.

The events are transmitted through CLADE’s Youtube and Facebook pages and from the Zoom platform, with simultaneous translation into Portuguese, English and Creole, in addition to international sign language interpretation.
